In Boone County, Kentucky, white "rangers" beat a freed slave and force him and his family to leave

In another example of racial intimidation, the local press in Cincinatti, Ohio reported that a freed slave named Harrison Griggs had sworn a complaint with the Freedmens' Bureau in Covington, Kentucky, stating that armed white men had come to his cabin in Boone County late at night.  They threatened his family, savagely whipped him, and demanded he leave the county and not return. He and his family left the next morning. (By John Osborne)

Two detachments of Company A, Second Minnesota Volunteer Cavalry, marching between Fort Wadsworth, Dakota Territory and Sauk Center, Minnesota, were struck by a fierce snowstorn that observers called the worst in decades.  One detachment reached their destination intact but the other was forced to halt for the night and a corporal froze to death. In Indiana, an overnight train derails and sends passengers cars off a bridge injuring dozens

A night train from Toledo, Ohio to Chicago, Illinois on the Michigan Southern Railroad encountered a broken rail approaching a bridge near Kendallville, Indiana.  The locomotive negotiated the rail but the sleeping car and a passenger car derailed and were dragged down an embankment.  No immediate fatalities were reported but dozens of injuries, some of them serious, were suffered, especially in the day car.  (By John Osborne)
