A supporter of the women's suffrage movement, Tubman speaks at the 1896 Rochester Convention

Throughout the 1880s and 1890s, Harriet Tubman emerged as a supporter of the movement for women's suffrage. Speaking in support of the movement at the Rochester Convention in New York, Tubman was introduced by Susan B. Anthony.

Harriet Tubman leads an armed raid against Confederate forces in South Carolina

Becoming the first woman to do so in the Civil War, Harriet Tubman was credited with planning and guiding a significant armed raid by Colonel James Montgomery's 2nd South Carolina (African Descent) against Confederate forces, supply depots, and plantations along the Combahee River in coastal South Carolina. Union naval vessels brought back more than 800 slaves, many of whom enlisted in the Union Army. (By James Chapnick )

Harriet Tubman works as a nurse for the Union Army in South Carolina

Harriet was seen as a potentially useful asset to the Union Army in dealing with freed southern slaves, or "contrabands." For most of her time in South Carolina, Tubman worked as a nurse and supported herself by cooking, sewing, and providing other services to the soldiers.

Leading a crowd in Troy, New York, Harriet Tubman rescues runaway Charles Nalle

Charles Nalle, a fugitive from slavery in Virginia and a resident of Troy, New York, was arrested by federal officials under the Fugitive Slave Law. Nalle faced a federal hearing and the real potential of being sent back into slavery in Virginia. Local vigilance members, including Harriet Tubman who was visiting relatives in Troy, gathered at the federal commissioner's office and led a crowd against the police officers holding Nalle and brought him away to safety.
