A severe derailment near Auburn, New York destroys three railroad cars but remarkably kills no-one

Passengers and crew of a New York Central passenger train had a fortunate escape when a broken rail on a curve derailed three passenger cars and sent them down a twelve foot embankment about a mile and a half from Auburn, New York.  The cars suffered heavy damage but remarkably no-one was killed or fatally injured, although some passengers suffered severe bruising and broken bones.  (By John Osborne)

A massive celebration featuring a 1,500 person parade was held in Cedar Falls, Iowa to celebrate the groundbreaking for the Iowa Central Railroad.  The ambitious project which sought to forge a direct north to south rail link between St. Paul, Minnesota in the north and St. Louis, Missouri in the south was never able to compete fully with east-west lines and in 1912 became part of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Rialroad.  (By John Osborne)

In San Salvador, former El Salvador president Gerardo Barrios is executed at dawn

General Gerardo Barrios had been president of El Salvador between March 1859 and October 1865.  He had a strong reputation as a liberal reformer who often clashed with the Catholic hierarchy.  He had been deposed when defeated in a war with Guatemala in 1863 and replaced by Francisco Dueñas.  In exile he had fallen into the hands of Nicaraguan conservatives who had him extradited to his homeland where he was tried and shot.  (By John Osborne)
