In Wisconsin, at least seventeen people die as a killer tornado devastates the village of Viroqua in Vernon County

Just after four in the afternoon, a massive tornado hit the the village of Viroqua, Wisconsin destroying most of its structures and killing at least seventeen of its inhabitants.  The dead included eight of the twenty-four students and their teacher in a one room school on the edge of town.  Sixteen children there survived.  One of the deadliest in Wisconsin history, the tornado was on the ground for thirty miles, cutting a path three hundred yards wide.  Later reports suggest more of the 100 injured died bringing the final death toll to twenty-two. In Brooklyn, the visiting Athletic Baseball Club of Philadelphia defeats the Resolute Club of Brooklyn 39-14.

The Resolute Baseball Club of Brooklyn hosted the visiting Athletic Club of Philadelphia at an afternoon match at the Union Ground in Brooklyn.  In a two and a half hour match, the visitors took control in the fifth inning and ran out handy winners by a score of 39 to 14.  Following the game, the clubs shared a dinner at the Maison Doree in Brooklyn.  The Athletic Club played Gotham the next day in Hoboken before returning home.  (By John Osborne)

The Great North-Western Sanitary Fair closes in Chicago, Illinois having raised $270,000

The last great Sanitary Fair of the war to raise funds for the United States Sanitary Commission and the Chicago Soldiers' Home had opened in Chicago, Illinois on May 30, 1865.  The affair, with its centerpiece of Union Hall among the specially constructed buildings near the lakefront, raised more than $270,000 for sick and wounded soldiers.  A highlight was the visit of Generals Grant and Sherman.  (By John Osborne)

In Lincoln County, Georgia, bandits make off with $250,000 of the last of the Confederate gold reserves

A significant amount of gold had accompanied Jefferson Davis from Richmond in the last days of the Confederacy.  A portion of that specie was being transported back to Virginia from Washington, Georgia when former Confederate guerillas attacked the wagons at an overnight stop in Lincoln County, Georgia.  The bandits made off with around a quarter of a million dollars in gold, most of which was never recovered.  (By John Osborne)

In Nashville, Tennessee, a massive fire destroys a government warehouse and four million dollars in goods

At around 2 p.m., a fire broke out at the massive Taylor's Depot, a government storehouse on Summer Street in Nashville, Tennessee.  By five o'clock the building was completely burned out, along with a reported $4,000,000 worth of government stores.  The 500,000 pounds of wagon grease and the 100 barrels of tar there burned nicely, forcing firemen back from the blaze.  No injuries were reported, however.  (By John Osborne)
