In Columbus, Ohio, thousands view President Lincoln's remains during a day at the State Capitol

President Lincoln's funeral train left Cleveland around midnight and travelled through the early morning hours, passing crowds in every small Ohio town.  It arrived in Columbus at 7:30 a.m. and the coffin was taken with great ceremony to the State Capitol rotunda where it remained until the procession made its way back to the depot to resume the casket's long journey at 10 p.m., on towards Indianapolis, Indiana.  (By John Osborne)

President Lincoln's remains spend the day in Cleveland, Ohio, on their journey west

President Lincoln's funeral train rolled through the night across New York to Pennsylvania and then into Ohio, arriving at Cleveland at 7 a.m.  The coffin was carried in procession to a specially built structure in a public park.  Despite intermittent rain, around 50,000 people viewed the slain president before the coffin was closed and taken back to the depot to resume its journey at midnight, towards Columbus.  (By John Osborne)

President Lincoln's remains spend the day in Buffalo, New York before heading for Cleveland, Ohio

Abraham Lincoln's funeral train made a lengthy journey from Albany to Buffalo, New York, arriving at 7 a.m.. The coffin was removed to the St. James Hall in the town and remained there for viewing until eight o'clock in the evening.  Former President Millard Fillmore was among the estimated forty thousand paying their respects. The remains resumed their journey westward at ten p.m. bound for Cleveland, Ohio.  (By John Osborne)

President Lincoln's funeral train makes its way across upstate New York to Buffalo

Abraham Lincoln's funeral train made a lengthy journey from Albany to Buffalo, New York. It left Albany at 4 p.m. and rolled across upstate New York only stopping for fuel and water. At each town, the locomotive slowed, allowing thousands gathered at all hours to pay their respects.  At 9:25 p.m., people waited in the pouring rain at Rome, for example.  At Rochester, thousands waited to see the train at 3:20 a.m. (By John Osborne)

At Albany, thousands of citizens file past Abraham Lincoln's coffin in the State Capitol

President Lincoln's remains had arrived in Albany, New York just before midnight and his coffin was opened to receive visitors at half past one in the morning. For the next twelve hours and more, up to fifty thousand citizens were estimated to have filed past to view the body.  The coffin was closed at 2 p.m. and the funeral journey to Illinois resumed at 4 p.m., heading west. Secretary Edwin Stanton intervenes to ensure African-American participation in New York's funeral procession

New York City authorities had earlier announced restrictions on the five thousand African-Americans who had planned to take part in the murdered president's funeral procession in the city.  Reportedly, Secretary of War Stanton heard of the efforts and intervened to get the orders lifted. Sadly, though they were escorted by New York policemen, only two or three hundred braved the parade, fearing violence and arrest. (By John Osborne)

President Lincoln's remains depart New York City after a massive procession across the city

Just after noon, Abraham Lincoln's coffin was at the center of an impressive procession that carried the remains in great pomp to the Hudson Railway depot on Thirtieth Street.  Press estimates were that up to 100,000 people participated in the procession itself, with another 350,000 watching on. The funeral train left for Albany and a viewing at the state capitol at 4:15 p.m. and arrived there just before midnight. (By John Osborne)
