Union troops land below Port Hudson seeking to make contact with Admiral Farragut's naval force

In order to make contact with Admiral Farragut's naval forces, General N.B. Banks dispatched Colonel Theodore W. Parmele and  the 116th and 147th New York Infantry, together with elements of the 2nd Rhode Island Cavalry, to the plantation of W.D. Winter's Plantation, about three miles below Port Hudson on the western bank of the Mississippi.  The mission was a futile one since Farragut had already moved northwards up the river and the troops were withdrawn after a week's foraging in the area.  (By John Osborne)
