This article from the Charleston Mercury, a Democratic newspaper in South Carolina, reports on rumors circulating Washington about the possible break-up of President James Buchanan’s cabinet. Secretary of Treasury Howell Cobb from Georgia and Secretary of War John B. Floyd from Virginia both eventually left the cabinet, but not until the secession crisis of December 1860. Senator James Pearce of Maryland was also a Democrat. (By Anna Lovett)
