Abraham Lincoln takes the oath as the sixteenth President of the United States at the U.S. Capitol
Just after one o'clock in the afternoon of a cloudy and raw day in Washington D.C., James Buchanan and Abraham Lincoln entered the U.S. Senate Chamber arm in arm. From there, the proceedings moved to the central portico of the U.S. Capitol where Abraham Lincoln delivered his first inaugural address. He was then sworn in as the sixteenth President of the United States. (By John Osborne)
