Quamony, Abraham J.

Abraham J. Quamony was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in March 1837 and went on to become corporal in Company E, 24th United States Colored Troops. He enlisted as a private when he was 27-years-old on February 13, 1865 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania although family tradition maintains that he enlisted in Philadelphia. He was trained at Camp William Penn and saw service around Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. He was promoted on August 22, 1865 and was mustered out of service on October 1, 1865. Quamony had a brother Peter who served with Company C of the 3rd United States Colored Troops. A laborer and resident of Conestoga, Pennsylvania, Quamony died on May 25, 1912 and was buried at Stevens Greenland Cemetery in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Quamony descendant Darlene Colon has preserved many details about his life and career which she shares in public presentations and on the Internet. (By Jake Rainwater)
