Lee, Charles

Charles Lee was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania around 1840 and worked as a waiter prior to his service in the Civil War. He enlisted at twenty-four years old in Company H of the 22nd United States Colored Troops Regiment on January 11, 1864 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania for a three-year term. Lee was promoted to corporal in June 1864. The official records described him as being about five feet and six inches tall with black hair, eyes, and complexion. The 22nd USCT organized its regiments in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from January 10-29, 1864 and received orders to go to Yorktown, Virginia, where the regiment stayed until May 1864. The regiment took part in the Battle of Petersburg in June 1864 and the Battle of Chaffin’s Farm in September 1864 before being moved to Texas to continue active duty in 1865. The 22nd USCT mustered out on October 16, 1865. Charles Lee was buried in Bethel AME Cemetery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. (By Brenna McKelvey)
