FOLLY. – In an article in the Washington States, a few days ago, we find the following paragraph:
“A sentiment is beginning to develop itself in the slaveholding States which, if we mistake not the signs of the times, will soon be heard in Washington, demanding of Howell Cobb, John B. Floyd, Jacob Thompson, and Joseph Holt, an answer, whether they are prepared to surrender the purse, the sword, and the navy, to Sewardism, in case of its consolidation, on the 4th of March, 1861.”
We have seen no indications of such an intention in the South, but there are plenty of people foolish enough to make such a demand of the Cabinet named. It is a way some of our people have had four many years of strengthening the hands of the enemies of the South by taking untenable positions and backing out when brought to the test. Such a demand as that indicated above would be a challenge to the North to elect a Republican President, as it can do, and may do, knowing very well from past experience that whatever pledges Messrs. Cobb, Floyd, Thompson and Holt and all the Southern Democratic leaders may make to affect Southern elections, they will very quietly vacate their places on the 4th of March 1861.
