In New York City, 12,000 Republican "Wide-Awakes" march in a huge torch-lit night parade

An estimated 12,000 members of New York City's Republican "Wide-Awake" clubs, together with representatives from across the river in New Jersey and with brass bands at their head, held a massive evening demonstration and parade through Manhattan.  The marchers were dressed in the typical para-military uniform of caps and capes and carried flaming torches and reportedly took two hours to pass.  The parade proceeded down Fifth Avenue and onto Broadway, ending at City Hall Park. Republicans sweep to victory in state-wide elections in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and Minnesota

Elections for state-wide offices were held the same day in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and Minnesota.  All resulted in Republican victories with men like Andrew Gregg Curtin in Pennsylvania and William Dennison, Jr. of Ohio elected to the governor's mansion.  The size of their majorities made it clear that the Lincoln-Hamlin ticket would sweep these states in the upcoming general election and the news further stimulated talk of secession in the South.  (By John Osborne)

Florida holds state-wide elections, choosing Breckinridge Democrat John Milton as governor

Florida statewide elections resulted in victory for Georgia-born Breckinridge Democrat John Milton as governor over Constitutional Unionist Edward Hopkins.  The results indicated that the Breckinridge ticket would carry the state in the general election.  Milton was sworn in a week later and served in that office for the entire Civil War.  Rather than submit to reunion in April 1865, Milton shot himself at his home and is buried in Marianna, Florida.  (By John Osborne)
