Much anticipated tour of English cricket's finest players begins in Montreal

The touring team made up of the best cricketers in England began their tour of North America in Montreal where they took on the Canadian select team before a large and enthusiasic international crowd.  The English played with eleven players and the Canadians with twenty-two but the result was never in doubt as the visitors handily defeated their hosts.  The tour later moved on to New York, where a similar result was played out against the best of the cricketers of the United States.  (By John Osborne)

Illinois Democrats of the Sixth District nominate John A. McClernand for Congress

The Democrats of the Sixth Illinois Congressional District held their convention and nominated John Alexander McClernand as their candidate.  The gathering also endorsed the views of Senator Douglas on popular sovereignty.  Hostile to abolitionists and a veteran of previous Congresses, McClernand was elected.  When the Civil War broke out, he was a staunch Unionist and served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Major General and commanding the Army of the Mississippi.  (By John Osborne)

New York Episcopal Convention votes to reinstate Benjamin T. Onderdonk as Bishop

Benjamin T. Onderdonk , the Episcopal Bishop of New York, was charged in 1845 with advances against female parishioners and suspended from office. Evidence of sexual harassment seemed clear, but these charges had originated also with southern bishops who suspected him of supporting Catholicism.  Decades later a third and final New York effort to reinstate him came in 1859 when the New York Episcopal Convention voted to restore him to office.  The national body rejected this and Onderdonk died, still under suspension, in 1861.  (By John Osborne)
