New York Herald correspondent tried for espionage

New York Herald war correspondent Thomas Wallace Knox was tried by a federal court martial at Young's Point, Louisiana for espionage and disobeying military orders. After a fourteen day trial, he was found guilty and barred from the war zone. Abraham Lincoln later reversed the findings. (By John Osborne)

First iron truss bridge in the nation completed in Pennsylvania

An iron truss bridge, constructed of prefabricated sections, was completed overnight between Saturday and Sunday on the main line of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company near West Manayunk, Pennsylvania. A little over ten yards long, it was the first of its kind in the country. (By John Osborne)

School for the physically disabled incorporated in New York City

A school for the physically disabled was incorporated under the auspices of the New York Society for the Ruptured and Crippled.  The private school opened at the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled in New York City on May 1, 1863 on Lower Second Avenue. (By John Osborne)
