The Pony Express begins its first run

At about the same time, the first Pony Express riders left St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California, John Ruff riding west and Hugh Wallace riding east. The westbound package arrived in ten days and the eastbound in just over eleven. From then until the service was discontinued on October 24, 1861, riders departed these cities each noon, six days a week. The cost was five dollars per ounce. (By John Osborne)
