First railroad that will run west of the Mississippi is incorporated

The Pacific Railroad of Missouri is incorporated in St. Louis.  It will become the first railroad to run west of the Mississippi River but will not have its inaugural run until December 23, 1852, over a five mile stretch west from St. Louis. (By John Osborne)

Military camels arrive in Texas

Thirty-four camels, purchased at Smyrna in Turkey and transported from the Middle East aboard the USS Supply, Lt. David Dixon Porter commanding, arrived at Indianola on the coast of Texas. Congress had earlier authorized funds for the War Department experiments using camels for military purposes. (By John Osborne)
