Lincoln denounces the Dred Scott decision

Responding to an earlier speech by Senator Stephen A. Douglas, Lincoln addresses an audience in the State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois on the troubles in Utah and Kansas.  He focuses, however,  on the recent Dred Scott decision.  Lincoln pledges that Republicans will not resist the decision but predicts that it will be soon overturned because it was "erroneous." Jury awards Abraham Lincoln $4,800 in legal fees

The Illinois Central Railroad convinced a judge to set aside an earlier directed verdict against the company in a fee dispute with their attorney, Abraham Lincoln.  The jury, however, quickly found for Lincoln, awarding him $4,800 for his work in the McLean County tax case. (By Matthew Pinsker)

Lincoln holds meeting regarding 1860 election

Abraham Lincoln and his legal partner William H. Herndon met with Frank Blair from Missouri in their law offices in Springfield, Illinois.  The trio discussed plans to convince leading border state newspapers such as the Missouri Democrat and Louisville Journal  to support the Republican Party in the election of 1860.  (By Matthew Pinsker)

The Lincolns entertain over 300 guests at their home in Springfield

Abraham and Mary Lincoln host over 300 guests at their home on Eighth and Jackson streets in Springfield at what friend Orville H. Browning describes in his diary as a "large and pleasant party."
