Senator Seward campaigns for the Republican Party in St. Joseph, Missouri

As part of his speaking tour in support of the Republican ticket, Senator William H. Seward spoke in Missouri and then Kansas.  He had arrived in St. Joseph, Missouri the night before, spoke to around 2000 people that evening and left the next morning for Leavenworth.  From there he went on to Topeka and Lawrence.  (By John Osborne)

Gloucester schooner lost off the coast of Maine and eleven sailors drown

Around ten o'clock in the evening, the Gloucester, Massachusetts schooner Neptune's Bride was caught in a storm and driven onto the rocks of Malcom's Ledge off the coast of Maine.  Of the thirteen men aboard, all but two were lost.  One climbed the mast and held on for twelve hours before he was rescued and the other was found clinging to the schooner's overturned boat. In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, an exploding boiler flies through four brick walls and kills twelve people

In the early afternoon, a boiler in a marble cutting factory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania exploded.  The main section of the twenty-two feet long boiler was torn from its mountings and driven out of the factory, through a nearby clothing store, killing the owner, and then into a beer hall, killing a patron, before coming to rest in the cemetery of a Presbyterian church.  In all twelve men were killed and several others were injured in the explosion.  (By John Osborne)

In baseball, Brooklyn Excelsior visits Maryland to play Baltimore Excelsior

The famous Brooklyn Excelsior Club visited Baltimore on a weekend tour and were hosted in a match against the Baltimore club of the same name.   In a game played on the first day of autumn, the Excelsiors of Baltimore could not stay with the renowned New Yorkers and lost the match by a lopsided score of 51-6.  (By John Osborne)

In Wisconsin, freight train hits a passenger train waiting in the station at Delavan and five die

In the evening, a passenger train of the Racine and Mississippi Railroad was waiting in the station at Delavan, Wisconsin while its locomotive took on water.  There it was hit in the rear by an eastbound freight train coming from Elkhorn, Wisconsin.  The impact crushed several of the rear passenger cars and five people were killed.  In addition, around twenty others were injured, half of them seriously.  (By John Osborne)

In Arkansas, fire heavily damages the business district of Fort Smith

A pre-dawn fire in the town of Fort Smith, Arkansas destroyed the City Hotel, the newspaper printing office, the U.S. Postal Office, with 4000 letters, and several other businesses on an entire city block.  Total damages to buildings and merchandise was estimated at around $200,000 but no serious injuries were reported.  (By John Osborne)

Rhode Island Republican Convention held in Providence

The Rhode Island Republicans met in Providence to nominate state electors for the upcoming presidential election. They selected the recent governor of the state, Thomas G. Turner and Woonsocket businessmen Lattimer W. Ballou, who had met Lincoln on his trip to the area earlier in the year, former Whig Lieutenant-Governor Elisha Harris, and Quaker David Buffum.  (By John Osborne)

In Kentucky, Louisville and Nashville Railroad open their latest section between Louisville and Clarksville, Tennessee

The Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company completed the latest section of track on its Memphis Branch.  The new forty-six mile stretch enabled a special train that same day to run between Louisville and Clarksville, Tennessee and a celebratory dinner was held for 700 people there.  Regular service began on September 24, 1860 with the 64-mile run from Bowling Green, Kentucky to Clarksville taking three and a half hours.  (By John Osborne)

Fog and heavy rains afflict New York City and vicinity

Heavy rains began in the region around New York City on the Wednesday night and continued for several days. Damage was light but basements in the city and surrounding towns suffered flooding.  Buildings and streets were heavily flooded as far away as Newark, New Jersey, for example. (By John Osborne)

Senator Douglas's New York campaign swing arrives in Rochester

Stephen Douglas continued his punishing and unprecedented campaign schedule in upstate New York with a visit to Rochester.  He arrived from Syracuse by train and spoke in the afternoon to a crowd of thousands in Washington Square.  That night torch-lit processions made there way through the downtown and bonfires reportedly burned at the main intersections.  From Rochester, Douglas moved on to Niagara Falls, New York.  (By John Osborne)
