Lieutenant-Governor Wood sworn in as Governor of Illinois after the death of William Bissell

Two days before, the sitting Republican governor, William Henry Bissell, had become the first governor of Illinois to die in office, a victim of pneumonia.  Lieutenant-Governor John Wood was inaugurated at the State Capitol in Springfield on this day.  (By John Osborne)

Spain signs the punitive treaty imposed upon Morocco following the recent war

Queen Isabella II had approved the preliminary terms of the treaty between Spain and Morocco in March.  The final treaty signed was significant for the ceding of territory to Spain, leaving the city of Tetuan in the hands of the Spanish for a period, and the imposition of an indemnity on the North African state of twenty million piastres.  (By John Osborne)

Queen Isabella II approved the preliminary terms of a treaty between Spain and Morocco.  The treaty itself was signed on April 27, 1860 and was significant for the ceding of territory to Spain, leaving the city of Tetuan in the hands of the Spanish for a period, and the imposition of an indemnity on the North African state of twenty million piastres.  (By John Osborne)

Pope Pius IX decrees excommunication for "sinful insurrection" in the Papal States during 1859

Pope Pius IX issued Letters Apostolic that excommunicated all those who had last year instigated or taken part in "sinful insurrection" in the Papal States of Italy. Several of the Pope's provinces had suffered serious upset and revolt during the unrest surrounding the war between France and Sardinia and the Austrian Empire during 1859.  The Pope's instructions sought to invoke divine judgement in such cases.  (By John Osborne)
