Prince Albert visits Philadelphia and attends the opera

The royal party reached Philadelphia in the early evening and took rooms in the Continental Hotel.  He toured the city and attended the opera in a special performance of Friedrich von Flotow's romantic and comic opera Martha given by the musicians and singers of the Academy of Music from New York, especially brought in for the event. On October 11, 1860, the Prince left for New York City, arriving there by cutter from Amboy, New Jersey. (By John Osborne)

The Prince of Wales spends twenty-four hours in Baltimore

After a three day visit to Washington and a short visit to Richmond, Virginia, the Prince of Wales and his party traveled by rail to Baltimore and arrived there around 8 p.m.   He spent the night there, toured the public buildings of the city with the mayor the next morning and left again by train for his visit to Philadelphia.  He reached Philadelphia in the early evening and took rooms in the Continental Hotel.   (By John Osborne)

Prince Albert makes a brief visit to Richmond, Virginia

After spending three days in Washington as the guest of President Buchanan at the White House, the Prince of Wales left for a short visit to the South.  He went by steamer down the Potomac to Aquia Creek and then by train to Richmond, Virginia.  He arrived at around 7 p.m. and was installed at the Exchange Hotel.  He attended church the next day, visited Governor Letcher, and left for Baltimore and Philadelphia the following morning.  (By John Osborne)

The Prince of Wales visits the tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon

Prince Albert and President James Buchanan, along with his niece and various officials, took the U.S. Revenue cutter Harriet Lane up the Potomac to Mount Vernon, the ancestral home of George Washington.  There, the Prince toured the grounds, planted a commemorative tree, and visited the tomb of General Washington.  The party returned to the White House that evening after dinner at the British ambassador's residence. The Prince of Wales is in Washington, DC, hosted at the White House

The Prince and his party had left Harrisburg, Pennsylvania the previous afternoon and after a brief stop in Baltimore arrived Washington, DC that evening. Welcomed by the Secretary of State at the station, the party went to the White House where the Prince was to be hosted.  On this day, the British heir toured the U.S. Capitol, attended a state dinner, and watched fireworks in his honor from the balcony of the White House. In Pennsylvania, the Prince of Wales tours the state capitol in Harrisburg

The Prince and his party had arrived by train from Pittsburgh the previous evening after a dining stop in Altoona, Pennsylvania.  The royal party called on Governor William Packer and, riding in an open carriage through enthusiastic crowds, visited the state capitol and viewed the city from the dome.  The Prince then left for Washington DC and the most important diplomatic segment of his visit to the United States. The Prince of Wales visits Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Prince and his party left Cincinnati in mid-morning by train and arrived the same day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He was lodged at the Monongahela House and received an enthusiastic welcome.  The cold rain that had dogged his Canadian tour continued as he left for Harrisburg the next day one in the afternoon.  Reports estimated a crowd of 10,000 saw him off at the railroad depot.
